To make sure you are starting the year on a positive note, there are some things you can do now that will assist you in preparing for this class. I will be checking for these things during the first week.

Abstraction Journal (your AJ)
This is a BOUND composition notebook. It is NOT a spiral notebook. The composition notebook should have 100 pages in it. You will insert/tape pages into the back as it will be your glossary for the vocabulary you will need to know for the APCSP exam. You will be documenting your learning on a weekly if not daily basis. Things that I will look for are consistency in documentation AND the thoughts you are having about the learning. It isn't just the "what" you learn, but "how" you learn - the thought processing you document as you work through the new content , "why" is it important, and "where" do you see it in the real world ?
Please print this document (23 pages) and set up your Abstraction Journal.

Summer Reading
Blown to Bits: your life, liberty and happiness after the digital explorsion by Hal Abeson, Ken Ledeen, Harry Lewis Version1 - (c) 2008 ISBN 0-13-713559-9 (can be found on Amazon.com at $22.00) Version 2 will be released July 5th 2019 on Amazon.com at a cost of $26.00) Either book will be acceptable for this course. Although some technological references have been updated, the general content is the same. |
Reading Assignment
This book is an easy read because it references many things most teenagers and adults have experienced in the last 10 - 30 years. It is a non-technical book that offers explanations in layman terms and can be considered a good resource for the educated consumer. If you plan on purchasing technology or using the technology you have available to you "for free," you need to know the positive and negative aspects of using the technology.
For this course, you will be answering questions that are now you interact with the reading. Consider the questions not so much as straight-forward "right" answer types of questions (although there may be a couple of them), but rather, how you will use the information in your own personal walk through technology. You must support your statements with information from the reading and cite the page number(s) for which you are using as evidence.
Below you will find activities for the each of the chapters. In your abstraction journal, please summarize each of the required chapters (they are the chapters that have PURPLE lettering
